If you are growing grape vines you will have some enemies. These include insects, birds, deer and grape diseases. All of these could stand in the way of that perfect harvest that you are dreaming about!

Some common grape diseases include mildew, black rot, phomopsis cane and leaf spot, and fungus. Some symptoms that you may notice include a discoloration of the leaves, leaves covered with a film or lesions, or even a decay of the grapes. Normally a fungicide can take care of this. Just make sure that you do careful research before any treatments.

There are many different types of insects just waiting for your grape vines to start growing. Grape berry moths lay their eggs directly on the surface of the grapes. The larva then hatches and bore into the berries leaving behind small holes and webbing between berries indicating a problem. Look on the underside of the leaves for grape leafhoppers. The good news is that it usually takes a high population of them to do any real damage to your vines. And your yield can be greatly reduced by the Japanese Beetle. And another beetle, the rose chafer, will feed directly on te clusters of grapes. Your grape vines can stand some damage from insects. You should have planned on this when considering your yield. However, if you see it getting out of control, you may have to resort to insecticides. Insecticides can be dangerous, so read and follow the directions carefully.

Perhaps one of your biggest enemies will be birds. A bigger flock will be easier to scare away than individual birds. This makes both devastating to your crop. One solution could be to place bird netting over the grape vines. Be careful with this solution because if you put it too close to the vines, it could collect ice in the winter and damage your vines. The netting would be easy to install because of the trellis system. There are cannons on the market that give off loud blasts at timed intervals. You would set them to go off during the feeding times. This would not be a good solution for a small grower in town with vines in their backyard, as it would probably get complaints from the neighbors. Visual repellents can also be effective and easy to install. You could use something as simple as an aluminum pie plate hanging from a string, or purchase predator decoys such as hawks, owls or snakes.

Farther out in the country deer could be a problem. Especially early in the spring when their other food sources are scarce and your grape vines are starting to develop shoots and leaves. Odor repellents are an effective way to move the deer out. Some of the scents could include human, dog, soap, or coyote. The coyote is a natural predator of the deer, so this would be very effective.

So to get the yield that you planned on when growing your grape vines, you need to keep the grape diseases and pests under control. If you don’t, you may not have enough grapes to make wine!

The really nice thing about growing your own grapes is that they do not take up a lot of space. They are a vine and you will train them to grow on a grape vine trellis. This makes it easy to grow a plant or two in your backyard vineyard, or easy to mange many acres of grape plants.

The grape vines are not strong enough to support themselves, plus they would run wild on the ground without a grape vine trellis, which would reduce your yield and cause many other problems. A grape vine trellis can take on many shapes and looks, depending upon the needs of the grower. A backyard grower may want a very decorative grape vine trellis to add to the feel of his or her garden. Where as a serious grower may just be looking to save money and make a trellis that is more functional than decorative. There are many materials that can be used. These would include iron, pretreated wood, stainless steel, PVC pipe or aluminum. You can buy a decorative grape vine trellis pre-made or make one yourself. Just make sure to leave enough room for future growth. You should plan on about an eight foot square area for each grape vine.

Your grape vine trellis should be constructed and in place before you put any plants in the ground. Taller trellises are normally used in warmer climates. A shorter trellis would give your grapes a better chance of surviving the colder winter climates. The shorter grape vine trellis will normally be about three feet tall and the taller would be closer to eight feet tall.

Make sure that you spend some time planning before you start digging holes! Map the whole trellis system out and consider the lay of the land, the exposure from the sun, and the space requirements for each plant. It is highly recommended that you use cement in each hole to make your trellis solid. After all, it will be years before you see your first harvest, so this will be a permanent structure. Place your poles about eight feet apart. Then you will run two wires along the poles. You should use a rust proof galvanized steel wire. The first will be about three inches from the ground and the second will be at the top. You may attach them with staples or staple nails. You should also run a wire from the top of the end poles to the ground away from the structure to keep it tight.

And of course with the second option of just purchasing a pre-made grape vine trellis, you will still have to do some careful planning. Once your vineyard is started, it can not be moved. Make sure also that your trellis is made of a long lasting material and that it is plenty sturdy.

As your grape vines begin to grow you will have to “train” them to grow in the direction that you want. Use string or cloth to tie the vines to the wires. Do not use wire as it could do damage to the vine.

As with anything, the foundation is normally the most important part of the project. If your grape vine trellis is not sturdy and long lasting, you will be setting yourself up for a disaster. Put in the correct effort now and enjoy the fruits of your labor later!

It almost goes without saying that the taste of your wine is determined by the quality of your grapes. Therefore grape planting and growing is one of the most vital steps in the wine making process.

You have surely heard it said that location is everything in the sales of real estate. Well the same can be said for grape planting. The photosynthesis process needed by the grapes will be aided by good access to sunlight. This is the process that causes sugar to fill the grapes, which will turn to alcohol after the fermantation process. The type of soil is important as well. So you will be looking for well drained soil that is a little low on nutrienants. This will cause the vines to have smaller grapes, which will make for a better tasting wine. Make sure that it is well drained. You do not need to add compost or nutrientas unless the soil is so bad that weeds will not even grow! Also you will want both sides of the vine to get equal sunlight if possible.

When planting your grapes you will want the vines about six feet apart. And if you are planning a large crop, you will want rows that are about eight feet wide. You can plan on about one gallon of wine from each grape vine. When planning for the number of vines to produce the amount of wine you want to make, leave an allowance for some lower yields due to pests or less than perfect conditions. And since the grape is a vine you will need a trellis for support. When digging the hole dig it deeper and larger than it needs to be. This will allow the soil to be looser and allow for some extra drainage.

The first year of growing your grape vine tie the main shoot to the trellis with string. The string will not do the damage that a wire would do. Be sure to clip off any other shoots that come up from the roots. When it goes into the dormant stage you will need to prune it back. When the buds start to show in the spring you will need to select a strong shoot on each side of the main vine that will become the arms to hold the grapes. Tie them to the trellis loosely.

It would be wise to purchase a hydrometer at harvest time. You can easily find one at a wine making store or online. It measures the specific gravity of liquids. It will let you know the sugar content of the grapes. The ideal gravity would be between 1.095 and 1.105. The higher would be better. This is the time to harvest the grapes.

After the grape planting it will take several years before you see any wine. But patience is a virtue and the rewards are great. Your dedication and time will be rewarded with some of the best wine you have ever had. And you and your friends will be impressed with the outcome.

Growing grapes to make wine has been around for a long time both as a hobby and a big business. And even though it is very fun and rewarding, there is some work and dedication involved in maintaining grape vines. Learning how to prune the grape vines is not hard, but very important. And like most plants grapes will need weeding, pest control, and pruning in order to insure the best harvest. It can be three years before your first harvest and you must still prune and care for the vines in the pre-grape producing stages of growth. In basic terms pruning the vines encourages more growth.

It takes years of training to maintain the grape vive size, shape and productivity. As soon as you have the trellis erected and have planted the grape vines, you are ready to start training. You will allow the vines to grow from one shoot directly from the roots. Any other shoots that start to sprout should be clipped off. The main shoot will be tied to the trellis vertically. After the first dormant period you will need to start the arms of the grape vine. Two shots should be tied to the trellis horizontally tha will serve as the support for the grapes. Again trim all other shoots off. Even after the desired shape is acheived, still continue to prune the vine, even during the dormant stages. It is critical to continue pruning throughout the life of the vine.

Grapevine pruning is based on the type of grapes that it will produce. The hybrid varieties are hardier during the winter months and are more resistant to diseases. They will typically ahve less foliage than the traditional type of grapevines. The previous years fruiting canes or spurs will be removed during the pruning process. The shoots from one year canes are the only ones to produce grapes and therefore the vine must produce healthy canes each year.

The fruitful buds removed during pruning can reduce the crop production. The crop level is influenced by the amount of pruning. If the vine is pruned too much, it will cause more shoots to grow and the vine will produce more grapes and leaves. If the vine has too many leaves it will create shade which makes it harder for the grapes to ripen.

To prune grape vines hand tools are normally used. They would include loppers, hand pruners and handsaws. You should be very careful when pruning to avoid injury to the vines. One year old shoots should be able to be removed with hand pruners. Larger wood will need to be trimmed with the loppers or handsaw.

Learning how to prune grape vines is not hard but very important if you want to get the most from your vineyard. The quality of the harvest will depend upon the fruits of your labor and your dedication

Growing grapes and making wine has been a large part of history almost as long as man has been making it. It is certainly not centralized in any one region. It has been a worldwide tradition. And even today the growing of grapes and making wine is just as rewarding and more than worth the effort required.

First you will have to learn how to grow grapes, and then you can learn how to make the wine. First you must decide upon a variety of grapes. The two varieties are European and hybrids. Californians in the traditional grape growing areas will probably use the European variety. Grape growers in areas with shorter growing seasons will be limited to the hybrid varieties. The hybrid grape varieties have a stronger resistance to diseases and are hardier, because of their breeding.

If you are learning how to grow grapes to make wine for your personal use, you need to decide if you would like red or white wine. You must also take into consideration that grapes are perennial plants and that it takes about three years before you have your first harvest. Also know that the quality of the wine that you make is more affected by the grape vines and their exposure to the elements than your wine making skills.

Your grape vines will need a moist, but well drained growing site. Nutrients are very important, especially with younger vines. If the grape vines do not get enough nutrients or moisture, they will suffer from stress. This in turn will cause the grape vine to produce small grapes. This is good because the smaller grapes have more flavor and color. That is because most of the color and flavor comes from the skins. The bigger grapes would be better for eating. They would have less skin and more juice.

At harvest time you will be looking for fully ripe and disease free grapes. Most hybrid grapes are high in acidity. Before you add the yeast you must get the acidity to the correct level. You will need chemicals from your wine making supply source to accomplish this.

After the acidity level is correct and you are ready to ferment the grapes you will add the yeast. There are several different types of yeast. Spend some time picking the correct one. The type that you pick will affect the flavor and characteristics of your wine.

Then the actual fermentation takes about a week and then the aging process starts. The aging process can take anywhere from several months to several years depending on several factors.

Once the wine is clear you can bottle it and then let it sit to age some more. Depending on the wine the longer that it ages the better it may taste. There are also many accessories that you can buy from your wine making supplier that will make you look like a pro. Corks, bottles, labels and foil shrink wraps. The most impressive thing may be your label. Take some time thinking about what you will want it to look like.

Learning how to grow grapes and make your own wine will definitely impress your friends, and even yourself! Imagine your friends sharing that first bottle with you. Some may be asking you for lessons!
